Until mid-December, I'll be studying Spanish and traveling around in Central America. My girlfriend Isolde and I quit our journalist jobs in Western Washington to have this little adventure. It should be quite the time; hopefully you'll enjoy the read.

Your tax dollars at work

You know, sometimes our government really loves to waste money.

I came across this cartoon insert in a daily newspaper down here, La Prensa. It's produced by a Nicaraguan non-profit that gets much of it's funding -- about $12 million, at my count -- from the U.S. government, mostly in the way of money for development assistance.

The money is supposed to be cleaning up dirty elections. Instead, it seems to me that we've been campaigning against Ortega.

Here's my favorite shot from the graphic. It's of Ortega stealing public funds.

I'd call it priceless, but it seems the U.S. AID was able to settle on a number.

Hope you like it. After all, you bought it.
